Composer Rossi (1812-1885) was born in Macerata. He was very popular at the time and was also a well-known educator, having taught Ponchielli and Boito. Cleopatra" was Rossi's second-to-last opera commissioned by the Royal Opera House of Turin, but it has been forgotten recently as it has never been performed. The production was applauded by the full house audience, and the work was reevaluated. The story is the well-known love-hate tale of Cleopatra and Antony (Antonio). The dramatic production features a wonderful aria and ballet set against a backdrop of red, white, and other color-changing scenery, with the elegant banquet scene in Act I being particularly noteworthy.
