Description:

Lopes-Graça was one of the greatest Portuguese composers of the second half of the 20th century. After studying composition and piano in Lisbon with Freitas Branco and Vianna da Motta, he settled in the university city of Coimbra, where he had close contact with a group of writers and intellectuals. The many Portuguese poems by poets such as José Lezio that he came to know during this time would have a great influence on his later work. The songs in the second collection of "Songs and Folk Songs" range from his early compositions influenced by French Impressionism to "Three Songs for April 25" based on the aforementioned poem by Legio, and were composed over 45 years ago. The melodies, which are based on Portuguese, Czech, and Greek folk songs, are characteristic of various countries, and one can feel the "utopia born of fraternity that transcends national borders," which was his goal. Soprano Susana Gaspar, a graduate of the Royal Opera House's Jet Parker Young Artists Program, is an up-and-coming singer who first attracted attention at the 2013 Cardiff International Vocal Competition, and has since begun her international career.Another young baritone, Ricardo Panera, also from Portugal, is known for his performances of both operas and songs.
