The political crisis and growing anti-Semitism in Europe in the first half of the 20th century brought many talented musicians to the United States, where they established themselves near Hollywood and formed one of the great communities. The composers of the works on this album are just some of them, and many other composers, performers, and other music-related people came and brought cultural prosperity. This recording is a collection of "works for cello" by such composers. Some are original works, others were arranged by Heifetz, who had also fled to this region, and others are small pieces in various forms. The cello of Averill Smith is a perfect accompaniment to the nostalgic pieces such as Korngold's Suite "Karafuto" and Godowsky's "Old Vienna," both of which are known for retaining a Viennese flavor, as well as to the more progressive pieces by Schoenberg and Stravinsky and the cello arrangement of the "Carmen Fantasy," which is full of individuality.
