Lebanese composer El-Khoury has already released six albums on NAXOS, mainly orchestral works, and his powerful sound has made him a favorite among some enthusiasts. He is a pianist of high technique by nature and has many works for piano, including four piano sonatas and several smaller pieces. Piano Sonata No. 1 is a short but unique work written in the traditional three-movement form, with a violent storm of sound mixed with a meditative atmosphere. The final movement, reminiscent of a toccata, is a must-hear. No. 2 is in two movements, and the contrast between the slow and fast sections is brilliant. No. 3 is a minimalist piece with a simple sound structure. Dedicated to the pianist Sinaldo, No. 4 is almost atonal, but has a dramatic development, and is the subject of the 2012 Marguerite Long International Piano Competition "River," the 1992 Ecole Normale du Musique competition "Exercises," the same Ecole Normale du Musique competition "Subject and Variations," and the 1992 Ecole Normale du Musique competition "Theme and Variations," which was also a competition subject.
