Anton Ulschpruf was a pianist and composer born in Frankfurt. From an early age he showed a talent for painting and music, studying with Ignaz Lachner and others; in the 1860s he met Joachim Raff, who introduced him to Liszt, who made him one of his most beloved pupils from 1871; in 1878 he taught pupils at the Hoch Conservatory, which had just been founded. Thereafter, he taught composition at the Raff Conservatory until his later years, and in his later years he devoted himself to the study of Christian music and Gregorian chant. Although a favorite pupil of Liszt, his style is conservative, emphasizing the traditions of Bach, Palestrina, and Gregorian chant, and belonging to the flow of Mendelssohn, Brahms, and others. His music is rich in melody and tightly structured, and has recently undergone a reappraisal. The "Five Pieces" is an emotionally rich piece dedicated to Liszt. The large-scale variations on a theme and 24 variations are influenced by Brahms' "Variations on a Theme Originally Composed," with occasional Schumann-esque melodies, and end with a grand finale reminiscent of Beethoven's later works.The "Cavatina" and "Arabesque" are small pieces for salons, but they are finely composed, with a singing E major Cavatina and a light three-part Arabesque side by side.
