Theodor Krac was a pianist, educator, and composer born in Krotzyn, Prussia (now Poland), who died in Berlin. His talent was recognized in childhood, and he honed his skills under the patronage of Prince Anton Radziwiłł, achieving success at the Berlin court during his youth. However, he lost his patronage during adolescence and was forced to study medicine. Despite this, he never abandoned his passion for music. He studied in Berlin with Siegfried Dehn and Wilhelm Taubert. After obtaining his doctorate, he received the king's support to study in Vienna with Carl Czerny and Otto Nicolai. Upon returning to Germany, he was appointed piano teacher to Princess Anna of Prussia, establishing his reputation in society. In 1846, he became court pianist. In 1850, he co-founded the Berlin Conservatory of Music and later established the private "Krak Academy," developing it into one of Germany's largest music education institutions. While exerting a profound influence as an educator, he also left behind numerous works as a composer and arranger, pursuing these activities energetically throughout his life.The "Grand Sonata in F-sharp minor" included in the album bears strong influences from Mendelssohn and Beethoven, while the "Piano Symphony" blends Italianate taste with a lively spirit reminiscent of Schumann and contrasting introspective expression. Furthermore, the ballades, scherzos, and other short pieces coexist with virtuosic brilliance and salon-style refined elegance, succinctly demonstrating the charm of 19th-century German piano music.
