Once as popular as Rossini and Suppé, Aubert's music is full of liveliness, elegance, and danceable rhythms. This eighth collection of overtures is performed by the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Dario Salvi, as was the previous one. The 1823 "Vendome in Spain" is a celebratory lyric drama set in Toledo, Spain, with Aubert and Errol sharing the music. Aubert later reused the overture from this work in his "Fra Diavolo. The Betrothal" is an operatic comic set in Vienna after the Napoleonic Wars, and it depicts themes such as freedom and the elevation of status through marriage. The overture, which includes an Austrian military tune, was a success in Paris. The Diamond in the Crown tells the story of Queen Catalina's attempt to save her nation with her jewels. The overture is decorated with heroic gallops and fanfares, and the baroque "Sarabande" expresses the conflicts of the characters. The Prodigal Son is a grand opera based on a biblical allegory.The overture depicts the departure and repentance of the hero, and the "ballet music" in the second act is five dances performed at the festival of the sacred bull Apis. It was later recomposed by Ashton into an independent ballet work as "Les Rendez-vous" and premiered in 1933. The song "On our way to Syria" was composed by Hortense de Boarne, and was unofficially treated as a national anthem during the Second Empire.
