Description:
World War I cast a dark shadow over the two cello concertos on this album. Elgar's cello concerto was conceived in the spring of 1918, but his deteriorating health interrupted its composition. The composition was completed in August of the same year. The music reflects the tragic and melancholic impression Elgar had received from World War I. The first performance in October 1919, with Felix Samond, who had been trained by Frank Bridge, as soloist and Elgar as conductor, was not well received, but later performances by Beatrice Harrison, Jacqueline Des Prés, and others brought the piece to popularity for its dramatic tone. The first performance of the cello concerto was not well received by the public, but later, when it was performed by Beatrice Harrison and Jacqueline Des Prés, it gained popularity for its dramatic tone and is now regarded as one of the representative works in the cello concerto genre. On the other hand, Bridge's dirge-like concerto "Prayer" was written after the end of World War I in memory of the victims of the war. A single-movement work of about 30 minutes that plays seamlessly, it is based on a slow tempo and meditative calm, interspersed with intense war-like phrases. The virtuoso Gabriel Schwabe plays the two works to his heart's content with his unwavering technique and wide range of emotional expression. Gabriel Schwabe was born in Berlin and studied at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Kronberg Academy, where he was trained by Janos Starker, Gary Hoffman, and Gidon Kremer, among others. He is widely active in Germany and Europe as a recitalist, chamber musician, and concerto soloist. Naxos Japan
