Description:
Louis Vierne was a French composer known for his majestic and brilliant organ works. Although blind from birth, he showed great musical talent. In 1900, he was appointed organist of Notre-Dame de Paris, a position he held until his death. This album features some of his rarely heard piano music. This is the first of two collections. His early works show the influence of Mendelssohn, and his works from around 1900, when he was gaining popularity as an organist, are full of joie de vivre and a lively atmosphere. The "Three Nocturnes," written in 1915, uses a softer impressionistic sound. The third nocturne in particular, with its effective use of birdcalls, is regarded as one of Vierne's masterpieces.
