Memories of the Mountains" by Beijing-born Quan Nai-Chung (1939-) was originally a concerto for banhu (a traditional Chinese huqin instrument), but here the solo instrument is replaced by the violin in search of a new sound. Inspired by the spectacular scenery of Alishan in Taiwan, the work consists of three movements, in which the violin sings a graceful melody accompanied by a group of traditional Chinese instruments. Joel Hoffman (1953-) was born in Canada. He has been a professor of composition at the University of Cincinnati College of Music for many years, and his works, which incorporate the essence of his research into Eastern European folk music and traditional Chinese music, are highly acclaimed around the world and have been performed by many orchestras to great acclaim. In the two violin concertos, Taiwanese-born Cho-Liang Lin, who is based in the U.S. and active internationally, delivers a masterful performance that conveys the heart of the music.
