Boris Giltburg and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vasily Petrenko finally complete their Beethoven: The Complete Piano Concertos. Giltburg delicately and eloquently performs two pieces that are deeply personal to him. Giltburg, who specializes in blogs and commentary videos that convey the appeal of classical music, also contributes a fascinating and compelling commentary to this disc. As a child, I was fascinated by the most intense of Beethoven's piano concertos, especially the dark, combative drama of the C minor that begins and continues for a while, and as I played more and more, I realized that the combination of the gentle, lyrical, and even humorous second theme with the major part was the work of a true genius.
