Description:
William Walton is one of the most important composers of 20th century British music, along with Benjamin Britten and Rafe Vaughan Williams. Included on this album are all works for violin and piano written between 1918 and 1950. The Debussy-like Piano Quartet was completed in 1919, but the complete score was lost, so Walton revised it many times, resulting in a unique work that combines the youthfulness of his early years with the maturity of his style, with quotes from works by Elgar and Ravel. The Toccata, another early work, is a delightful clash of exciting sounds, while the "Two Pieces," premiered in 1951, uses the melody from "Henry V," the film music he was focusing on. The Violin Sonata, whose second movement is written in the form of a large-scale variation, was commissioned by Yehudi Menuhin. It is a beautiful sonata with a lyrical melody. Naxos Japan
