Description:
Composed in 1950, the Symphony No. 1 is his first purely orchestral work, and while it is based on the classical style, it has an attractive colorful sound created by the addition of numerous percussion instruments. The first movement is a passacaglia (a kind of variation in which a short theme develops) led by a low string pitchcart, the second movement is a lively scherzo, the third movement is a difficult intermezzo, and the last movement is a bold theme led by timpani and percussion that reaches a grand climax and ends in a quiet conclusion. The success of this work brought Ditilleux international fame. Commissioned by the Cleveland Orchestra for its 40th anniversary, Metabolle is a free form variation. It was premiered by George Szell and has been performed around the world. Les Citations Quotations is a work for chamber ensemble, including harpsichord, with words from Britten's opera "Peter Grimes" and a passage from organist Jean Alain's work. Naxos Japan
