Description:
The "Codex de Guerra" was compiled in Madrid in the late 17th century. It is an anthology of secular songs that were popular mainly in the royal courts of Spain in the 17th century, and was discovered and published by two musicologists, Trent and Alvarez, in 1998. Most of these songs, which praise love and beauty, are attributed to unidentified composers, but some of them include works by Juan Hidalgo and José Marín, who were active in Spain in the 17th century. The score is very simple and allows a great deal of freedom in performance, but above all, the use of the Spanish baroque harp "arpa de dos ordenes" (double harp) is said to be ideal, and the elegant sound of the harp on this album adds a touch of elegance to the simple songs. The fourth collection, an important collection tracing the history of music in Spain, includes Marin's "O heart, be caught up in thyself," perhaps the best known song of the period. (C)RS
