Description:

In 1862, as a naval cadet, Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) was ordered by the Russian Imperial Navy to embark on a three-year ocean voyage around the world. The 17-year-old Rimsky-Korsakov, who had already begun writing a symphony, took the opportunity to complete the first, third, and last movements, and wrote the remaining one movement while ashore in England, sending it to Balakirev. However, Balakirev was not satisfied with the results and requested several alterations. Balakirev accepted Balakirev's advice and rewrote the First Symphony, which became a great success as the first full-fledged "Russian symphony" without the German flavor of the works of Anton Rubinshtein and others. He later reworked the piece, moving the original key of E-flat minor to E minor, making it even more accessible to the public. Unlike the "Russian" First Symphony, the Third Symphony, which is said to have returned to the classical style, was written over a long period from 1866 to 1873, using a scherzo written in 1863 and a trio written during his honeymoon in Italy in 1872.This piece was not very successful when it was first performed, and was eventually revised in 1886 to its current form. The second movement, written in 5/4 time, is especially striking in the heavy atmosphere that pervades the entire work. Gerard Schwarz, who specializes in large-scale works, plays with great care.
