This is a collection of overtures by the German-born, Italian composer Simon Meyer (1763-1845). The overture of this period was intended to discourage chattering of the audience, and the overture was placed in two-part form in Venice and a three-part sinfonia in Naples (which later developed into a symphony). However, Meyer introduced the Viennese overture form, in which the overture is a summary of the entire play and the atmosphere of the play, and he sometimes used instrumental solos to play the melody of the aria to be used in the main part of the play, in order to further heighten the anticipation of the main part of the play. Although there are few opportunities to listen to his operas today, the overture alone is a delightful experience. Recorded between 2008 and 2014 under the direction of Franz Hauck. (C)RS
