This manuscript, a collection of 43 secular songs compiled in the middle of the 15th century, is known for its heart shape. Created by a priest named Jean de Monschne, the manuscript, which he mischievously called "a self-defeating and all-embarrassing collection of songs," is a beautiful heart-shaped manuscript covered in velvet in a truly elaborate binding that opens to reveal an elaborately decorated score on both sides. The music was written by mostly unknown people, but some of the names include Dufay, Okehem, and Gilles Banschois. The actual music can be elegant melodies or high-tension tunes, and is also very varied. This is a must for lovers of the music of this period. Recorded in Switzerland in 2014. (C)RS
