Description:
Following Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 (8.573071) and Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4 (8.573112), this is a series of early orchestral works by Clementi (1752-1832), who composed several symphonies in the 1780s, but just as he was about to publish them, Haydn appeared. His Piano Concerto of 1796 is considered the "prototype" of Op. 33-3, usually played as a sonata. There is no autograph, but a transcription by Johann Schenck in 1796 has survived, but it is not known whether the sonata really came first and the concerto later. Clementi's biographer Plantinga also claims that the orchestral parts were written by Schenck and not by Clementi.The two symphonies of Op. 18 are works of well-rounded beauty in an extremely classical style. The first, in B-flat major, is a bit subdued, but the second, in D major, is vivacious music with ambitious harmonies. There must have been some rivalry with Haydn, but this is a wonderful work.
