The Swiss-born Jewish composer Bloch is often associated with such ethnic works as "Bar Shem" and "Hebrew Suite," but the two works on this album are more in the tradition of German late Romanticism, Bruckner, Mahler, and R. Strauss. The Symphony in C-sharp minor was written at the age of 20, when he was studying in Germany, and it is a powerful work that mixes the germ of his genius with the profound ideas of his later years. It is a wonderful work that was highly praised by Romain Rolland. The other piece, "Sea Poem," was originally written for piano and was inspired by a poem by Walt Whitman. Although the version written for piano is usually performed, the orchestral version by the composer himself is a masterpiece on par with Debussy's "The Sea.The ever-changing expression of the waves, the contemplation and stillness, the seven-colored surface of the water... The sea offers an astonishing array of expressions. Israeli-born female conductor Atlas perfectly recreates Bloch's score and reveals its hidden charms. Naxos Japan
