Description:
The sixth collection of piano sonatas and sonatinas by Ferdinand Ries (1784-1838), a pupil and friend of Beethoven, and a familiar face on the NAXOS label, is his three sonatas (sonatinas) for four hands. The piano sonatas in his oeuvre certainly have a special significance, and while his early works were influenced by his teacher Beethoven, his later works matured to such an extent that they strongly influenced the Romantic composers, Mendelssohn and Schumann. The three pieces on this album are all wonderful pieces of music, each with its own unique expression. The sonatina theme of Op. 6, with its small scale and simple structure, reminds me for a moment of Beethoven, but it is much more innocent and joyful music.The Op.47 sonata was composed in 1816, when Ries was newly established in London after a successful tour of Europe. The sonata Op.160, composed around 1831, was published as the "Grand Sonata" and dedicated to Carl Cherny. The piano keys are used to their fullest extent, and a thick sound that surpasses that of an orchestra is pursued. Although the Sonata is labeled as A major, the music moves back and forth between major and minor keys, and the music is far fuller than one would expect. Naxos Japan
