Saint-Saens (1835-1921) is considered to have laid the foundation of French music. Although a great composer, perhaps because he lived too long, he missed the wave of the times and is not highly regarded today. He wrote many works, but only a few of them have been heard. For example, his beautiful string quartets have been quietly buried. He was 64 years old when he first dabbled in the string quartet genre. Dedicated to Ysaÿe, No. 1 is a fine piece, full of transparency and sadness, even if it certainly does not have the hazy sound of impressionism. No. 2 is a work by Saint-Saens at the age of 83. Although it is written in a classical style, like Mozart's, and completely out of step with the current of the time, the unique modulations and other elements make us feel that this is the music of that period.
