This is the fourth collection of piano concertos by Ries (1784-1838) on NAXOS. The title of No. 5, "Rural Style," which he himself named, is one of his three titled concertos, but unlike the other two, it was attached to the score when it was first published. The title reminds everyone of Beethoven's "Rural Symphony," and of course Ries knew it well. Ries, of course, was familiar with this piece, but he was not influenced by it, and it is more likely that the "pastoral" idiom was everywhere in Bohemia and Austria at that time. As the title suggests, the music is peaceful and beautiful. Of course, there are some explosive moments at times. The Rondo, written in 1835, is a work "perfect for showing off one's skills," as was fashionable at the time.It is a wonder that such a good one was not published. Naxos Japan
