A special program commemorating the 100th anniversary of Ferruccio Busoni's death! "Doctor Faust," a masterpiece by the versatile musician active from the late 19th to the early 20th century, is based on the medieval Faust legend and Christopher Marlowe's play "Dr. Faustus. Busoni wrote the script himself, but left it unfinished upon his death. The work was completed by his pupil Philippe Jarnach in 1925 and premiered in Dresden. Since playing the role of Faust at the Opera de Lyon in 1997, Busoni has been a favorite of Dietrich Henschel, who has been a great success in the role, as well as the Vienna State Opera, and the Vienna Philharmonic, where he has been a member of the ensemble for his career. The cast features a fine lineup of singers, including Olga Vesmertna as the Duchess of Parma, a role she has held since her career at the Vienna State Opera. The eloquent baton of Cornelius Meister, whose repertoire consists mainly of modern and contemporary works, brings out the dramatic resonance and lyrical shadings of Busoni's intricately structured music.
