George Antheil was born in New Jersey, and in the 1920s, he traveled extensively in Europe, and during the "mad age" of Paris, he established a relationship with Picasso, Stravinsky, and others, establishing his career as a pianist and composer. He established his career as a pianist and composer. The first three of the four sonatas on this album were composed during this period. The first, composed for violinist Olga Raggi, the lover of poet Ezra Pound, is a unique work that combines Stravinsky's influence with the stylish atmosphere of Paris at the time. The more jazzy No. 2 is an attempt to express the early 20th century French avant-garde art movement called "Cubism" through music, with drums used to great effect in the miscellaneous melodies. Composed between 1947 and 1948, No. 4 adopts the style of the Baroque period. In particular, the second movement is in the form of a passacaglia with a six-bar theme that is varied ten times.
