Description:

Luis Wayne Ballard was one of the first Native North American musicians, also known by his alias, which means "honganose = stand with the eagle" in the Quapaw language of his settlement. He studied music at the University of Tulsa and after graduation worked at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Young students in the area at the time did not know their own tribal songs, so Ballard collected songs of the indigenous peoples and lectured and taught about them. Influenced by North American folk music, dances, and mythology, his compositions are twelve-tone, yet tonal, and unique in their use of percussion instruments. This album contains four pieces. The Devil's Walk, a dance and instrumental piece by the Quapaw tribe; "Kokopelli," the third piece from the six "Aboriginal Fantasies," named for the god of music; "Four Moons," Ballard's third ballet music, composed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Oklahoma's founding; and "Indian Life," a satirical treatment of a conversation between two tribes, from scenes. All are familiar music with rhythmic elements. Naxos Japan
