Description:
Ives is also known as a Sunday composer because he continued to compose while working for an insurance company. Although he is best known for his orchestral works, he also wrote many songs, and from 1915 to the mid-1930s, he assembled a "set" of several of these songs, arranged for performance without singing by a chamber orchestra of a few to no more than 20 people (small theater orchestras in Connecticut and New York City). set" of songs arranged to be performed without singing. The pieces in these sets are very short, ranging from less than one minute to three minutes at the most, and are filled with Ives's witty and endearing musical ideas. The compositions are accompanied by notes that allow for flexibility in the choice of instruments, depending on the circumstances of the ensemble and the instruments they are playing with, as well as the possibility of further instrumental substitutions as circumstances dictate. The performance was given by the Orchestra New England, conducted by James Sinclair, a well-known Ives scholar. The most suitable composition was chosen for each piece, and the orchestra's performance was excellent, backed by a deep understanding and love for the work.This is a rare recording of the complete works, including sets up to No. 10 and a "set for theater orchestra," for the first time.
