Description:
Florence Beatrice Price was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1887. She showed early musical talent and was accepted to the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music in Boston at the age of 14. 1932, she entered a composition competition and won first prize for her Symphony No. 1. The following year, on June 15, 1932, it was premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Music Director Frederick Stock to great acclaim, and she is considered the "first black female symphony writer. In recent years, her works have been reappraised and performed more and more often. In the third movement of the symphony, the third movement has a touch of African music, such as the Juba dance style from South Sudan, but Price has not quoted any specific folk songs or folklore, but has digested and composed her own original music. In contrast, "Mississippi River" intentionally quotes well-known spirituals such as "Deep River" and "Go Down Moses. The Mississippi River is compared to the Jordan River in the biblical world, and the work is like a symphonic poem interwoven with the history of blacks in America. The Shadow of Ethiopia in America" is titled after the history of blacks in America itself.Throughout the recordings, the song-like melodies and cheerful rhythms can be heard throughout, making this an enjoyable album even if you are unaware of its cultural and historical significance.
