Description:
Morton Gould is one of the leading American composers of the 20th century. His work in all genres, including classical, crossover, and film music, was highly acclaimed and won him both a Grammy and a Pulitzer Prize. This album features three symphonettes composed between the late 1930s and 1940s. The album features three symphonettes composed between the late 1930s and 1940s, each of which is unique in its use of jazz and traditional Latin American idioms. The term "symphonette" was coined by Gould himself, and his biographer, Goodman, tells us that he intended it to be like the newest consumer electronics developed in the United States at the time, but it soon became outdated and much regretted. However, the works themselves are very enjoyable, especially the bluesy trumpet melody of the second movement of No. 2, "Pavane," which is still popular today. Also, "Spiritual for Orchestra," whose premiere was a flop, is a work that gained popularity when Stokowski revisited it. Naxos Japan
