Description:
Gottschalk (1829-1869) is a composer belonging to the "Romantic Era" of the United States. The son of a merchant father, he grew up in a Creole (a race whose ancestors originally migrated to French Louisiana and had their own culture) town, where he was exposed to miscellaneous cultures from an early age. He began playing the piano at an early age and made his unofficial debut at the age of 11. Two years later, he went to Europe and applied for admission to the Paris Conservatory, but was unfortunately rejected. However, he met Berlioz and Chopin at that time and received their compliments; he returned to Japan in 1853 and subsequently worked in Latin America, composing nearly 150 rhythmic piano pieces based on the music of that region and the folk music of the Caribbean coast. His fusion of passionate rhythms and lyrical melodies that could be described as Chopin-esque has captured the ears of contemporary listeners as fine works that transcend the mere elegance of salon music.The lullaby on track 4, in particular, is so soothing that it overturns the image that has been associated with Godshalk's music...bright openness...until now. Of course, the piano version of "Tropical Nights" by pianist Mayer meets all expectations in its openness and passion. Naxos Japan
