Mark Obert-Sohn reissue. This is the first American recording of Oistrakh made for Columbia in the U.S., and has been released many times in Japan (especially with Mendelssohn coupled with Tchaikovsky). The monaural reissue brings the violin into sharp focus and the glossy sound back to life. The first collection of American recordings by the great Ukrainian-born violinist David Oistrakh is a reminder of the golden age: the phenomenal concentration and explosion of recordings produced on Christmas Eve 1955, recorded in better sound quality than in his native Soviet Union, with a great conductor and a famous orchestra. The recordings, which also received sympathetic accompaniment, capture the legendary virtuoso Oistrakh at the peak of his powers. Oistrakh's interpretation of the classical masterpiece is rich and beautifully toned, with a rhythmic toughness and restrained power that creates a creative tension unique to Oistrakh's playing.This is especially true of the Mendelssohn concerto, the second official recording. The Philadelphia recording of the wonderful Bach concerto is the first of three studio recordings, while the Mozart is the first of two commercial recordings, and is the better performance.
