This "Treasures of Danish Song" box set is the culmination of 25 years of work by Bo Holten and Musica Fikta in collecting and recording the magnificent heritage of Danish vocal and choral works (part songs). The project began with "A Danish Christmas," published in 1996, and has culminated in a magnificent anthology spanning medieval and contemporary Denmark. Holten arranged many of the pieces for solo voice and piano accompaniment himself for unaccompanied chorus. In doing so, he has taken care to keep the simple, folk-like character of the pieces intact so that they can be sung by anyone, while at the same time remaining faithful to the original compositions in terms of harmony and avoiding monotony, and has made the most of the charm of the melodies themselves to create concert repertoire of a quality that is on par with the best.
Bo Holten established his reputation as a conductor of old vocal ensembles by founding Ars Nova in 1979, and is internationally known as a leading conductor in this field. He has been a guest conductor with a wide range of orchestras, ensembles, and choirs throughout Scandinavia and abroad, and was the guest conductor of the BBC Singers for 16 years before becoming the principal conductor of the Flanders Radio Choir from 2007-12.Founded by Horten in 1996, Musica Fikta is an important force in Danish music and one of the leading vocal ensembles in Europe. As an ensemble, Musica Fikta combines the ideals of ancient music with the warmth of Scandinavian choral music, and performs programs that incorporate historical, literary, and philosophical perspectives.
