Description:
The first recording with the Berlin Philharmonic, "Rhine" and other analog recordings from 1978, and Schumann's No. 4 & "Italia" from 1980 are collected on two discs with their original couplings. This is the first SACD project of the digital recording (DISC2)! The first two recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker were made in October 1978. The performances, based on the profound sound of the peak of the Karajan era, with Tennstedt's typical disciplined performance, are still fresh even today. The two pieces recorded in 1980 were added to the set, and the original couplings of each disc are now included in this 2-CD set. The analog recording on DISC 1 was digitized at 192kHz/24bit from the original analog master tapes in Japan for this release, and DISC 2 is a new SACD recording from the initial digital recording, both mastered separately for the SACD and CD layers. New commentary included. There may be a reason why the Berlin Philharmonic chose Schumann's "Rhine" and other symphonies for their first recording with EMI, but even if there had been earlier complete Schumann symphonies by Karajan and Kubelik for DG, the repertoire of Schumann symphonies by German conductors of the past had been dominated by the Fourth. The recording of the "Rhine" was a welcome addition to the market and to the Berlin Philharmonic (the only independent recording was a Reitner disc by DG in the monaural era). The performance of Schumann with a strong orchestra at the height of the Karajan era was not so much that Tennstedt, who was still not so famous at the time, made his reputation, but rather that it was a glamorous performance that reminded us of the orchestra's fundamental strength in Schumann performance. The second piece, "Konzertstück," in particular, is a masterpiece, and the power and tension of the four members, led by Seifert and Hauptmann, who led the section at that time, which is still the strongest horn corps in the world, is exceptional. This is still the only recording of the same piece by the Berlin Philharmonic and has been the object of admiration of many horn players, so the appearance of this recording is truly astounding. The stability of the high tones and the penetrating tone quality can be heard in this newly mastered recording. Since this 1978 album was recorded in analog at the end of its life, we have mastered it again from the original analog master tapes digitized at 192kHz/24bit. (1/2)
