Steve Reich Collaborates with German Contemporary Art Master Gerhard RichterGerman contemporary art master Gerhard Richter (1932-) and German filmmaker Corina Belz (1955-) collaborated in 2017 to produce the abstract film "Moving Picture (946 -3), a collaboration for which Steve Reich composed the music, premiering in April 2019 at The Shed, a cultural center in New York City. Richter repeatedly splits and mirrors computer images of abstract paintings, further abstracting the work and ending it with a plain strip of color. Reich's music, attached here, reflects Richter's visual changes while maintaining Reich's strict minimalist musical structure, shifting from a four- to sixteenth-note pattern, then to eight, then to sixteen. As the number of pixels in the film increases, so does the number of quarter notes. Midway through the film, the image changes from 512 to 1064 pixels, making the image larger and more "lifelike." The music, in turn, slows down. Then, as the pixel count begins to decrease, the music reverts to faster eighth notes, then sixteenth notes. This music was first recorded by the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the premier contemporary chamber music ensemble founded by Boulez in France, which performed at the Filarmonie de Paris in Bali in 2020.Includes a Japanese manual written by Hidekuni Maejima and a Japanese obi.
