Description:
Doohan wins battle with rising star Biaggi to win his 5th consecutive championship! Mick Doohan won his fourth consecutive 500cc class championship in 1997. To put an end to the era of this flawless rider, a new star has emerged. Max Biaggi, who had stepped up to the pinnacle class with a spectacular track record as the 250cc champion for four consecutive years, stunned everyone with a pole-to-win in his debut race. Doohan, on the other hand, retired from the first round due to machine trouble. The mass media was excited to see if a generational change was finally underway. Alex Crivile, who had been considered a rival until then, also made his presence known by winning the third round of the Spanish GP. However, Doohan, the champion, continued to win, despite the surrounding noise. With some luck on his side, including a disqualification for ignoring Biaggi's warning in Round 12, Doohan won his fifth consecutive victory in the 500cc class in the following Round 13, his home GP in Australia. In addition, he won the final round of the 1998 season for the first time in his career. Team Rainey announced its withdrawal from Grand Prix racing at the end of the season.
