The historical masterpieces of Lee Musici & Ayo, Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" in stereo and monaural! The Italian ensemble I Musici (founded in 1952), which was highly praised by Toscanini, has recorded Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" every time the concertmaster was replaced, and each recording has been the talk of the town. The two recordings with Felix Ayo as soloist (1955 mono, 1959 stereo) are still remembered as historical masterpieces. The stereo recording was made on 2-track, 38 cm open-reel tape, and it has a lush sound quality that excels in reproducing a sense of atmosphere. The monaural recording was reissued from a Philips LP in Holland, and I was surprised to find that the sound quality and performance were even better than I had expected. The stereo is soft and rich, with lots of reverberation, but the monaural has the charm of being directly in touch with the warmth of the tone, perhaps because it rings across the room in a cozy space. Generally, monaural recordings are not taken up much, but comparing them again in this two-disc set, more and more people may give the monaural one the edge.It is also apparent that their interpretation has changed considerably over the past four years. Please note that the stereo recording contains faint tape damage and the monaural recording contains noise characteristic of LPs, etc. This is a limited pressing due to the 2-CD/1-LP price. The commentary includes "Lee Mujichi's Roman Holiday," which introduces the 12 members of the band. The contents are very humorous and will be enjoyed along with the performance.
