Kalev Kuljus, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra
Description:
The sound of the oboe is suited to expressing purity, simple elegance, quiet joy, or the pain of a weak heart. These qualities are wonderfully expressive in the cantabile passages" (Ector Berlioz). Estonian oboist Kalev Krijus' album "Lovely Oboe Concertos" features four works from the Baroque period from the concertos for oboe and oboe d'amore that have been beloved by oboe players of all ages. The C major work by Vivaldi, who is said to have written concertos for almost every instrument used in the orchestra, and the work by the Venetian-born Marcello, composed in the early 18th century and considered the first oboe concerto in the history of music. A concerto in G major by Telemann, which uses the oboe d'amore, which has a lower register than the oboe, as the solo instrument. The "Oboe d'amore Concerto in A major" is a reconstruction of the oboe d'amore concerto, whose score is lost, from "Harpsichord Concerto No. 4 in A major, BWV.1055," which J. S. Bach had adapted for harpsichord. Kalev Krijus was born in Tallinn in 1975. He studied in Tallinn, Lyon, and Karlsruhe, won first prizes in competitions including the "Prague Spring" in 2001, and has been the principal oboe of the NDR Elbphilharmonie (formerly the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra) since 2003. He has been a guest soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He teaches at the music academies in Tallinn and Karlsruhe and gives master classes in Asia, Europe and South America, including Japan. The instrument is Model MSG2 of "Josef Oboe Josef Oboe".The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, with whom Krijus performs on this album, is one of the ensembles that Krijus regularly performs with, founded in Vilnius in 1960 by Saurius Sondetskis, with a repertoire centered on baroque and classical music and works by M. K. Chouryonis, The ensemble also actively premieres contemporary Lithuanian works by Baris Dvaryonas and Stasis Vainyunas. King International
