Richter's Paris debut and two recitals of tremendous perfection! The Paris show of Richter, which was released by Spectrum Sound from the source material provided by the Institut National d'Audiovisual (INA), has been licensed by Global Culture Agency and remastered in Japan for the SACD release! The 230 minutes of content is recorded on a single disc, taking advantage of the recording time only possible with SACD. The 1977 and 1980 recitals are of a very high level of perfection, including the exuberance that only live performances can provide. The overwhelming enormity of the three Chopin scherzos, the breathless concentration that gripped the audience in the boat song, and the virtuosity in the difficult etudes were all superb. The applause was intense, and you could tell how excited the audience was to be there. The Beethoven sonata was again superb, and the divine work that Richter, who was in top form, performed was on another level from the very first note. His soft and warm touch, exquisite phrasing, and deep spirituality all stunned me. The Brahms with Lovicki from 1961 is a rare recording of Richter's Paris debut, and offers a powerful performance by the 46-year-old Richter, full of youthful spirit and brilliant technique.
