Description:

The Smithsonian Folkways' "Classics" series compiles the Smithsonian Folkways' vast catalog of recordings on a single theme each time, such as blues, country, gospel, protest songs, Canadian songs, etc. The "Classics" series is a perfect introduction to the history of North American roots music. This time, we introduce "Classic Mountain Songs From Smithsonian Folkways," a collection that introduces musicians representing the mountainous regions of North America and the folk songs of the region. This album compiles the best performances of folk songs "mountain songs" from the mountainous regions of the United States that have been preserved in the Folkways. The main artists on this album are: Doc Watson (1923-2012), a blind guitar prodigy; Roscoe Holcomb (1912-1981), the "original High Lonesome" with a brilliant voice that touches people's heartstrings; Jean Ritchie (1912-1981), a female singer and dulcimer player with a beautiful, clear voice; and the late, great, and very popular "Dulcimer" singer, John Harris (1913-1998), who sang with a beautiful, clear voice. Jean Ritchie (1922-2015), a female singer and dulcimer player with a clear and beautiful voice, and Ora Bell Reed (1916-2002), a pioneer of female artists in bluegrass, are all legendary musicians who have left their mark on North American roots music history.
