This is one of the releases in the Ikon series, which features exclusive reissues of classic albums handpicked by the head of Gramola, a long-established record store in Vienna. This is a bold project that pairs two of Gershwin’s greatest masterpieces from the mid-20th century, transcending label boundaries. Bernstein’s *Rhapsody in Blue* and *An American in Paris* are recordings from Columbia (CBS) in the U.S., and thanks to their swinging performances, they remain classic staples still considered among the best interpretations of these pieces today. On the other hand, Ella & Louis’ *Porgy and Bess* (released in Japan as *Poggy and Bess*) is a recording on the legendary jazz label Verve (Verve), a unique album that—including its orchestration—transformed the piece from a “jazz-influenced opera” into pure jazz. Yet, the singing and performance are so superb that some consider it a historic masterpiece. It’s surprising that these two albums were produced in less than two years, and this release conveys the sentiment of the owner of a long-established record store in Vienna, who says, “I especially want classical music fans to listen to this *Porgy and Bess*.” *The original Verve release of *Porgy and Bess* contains 15 tracks, but this CD omits the “Overture,” “Song of the Vultures,” “Oh, Doctor Jesus,” and the “Medley.” *Lyrics are not included.
