Description:
[Piazzolla: The Cello Takes the Place of the Bandoneon] Piazzolla performed by the cello of Paris-born virtuoso Xavier Phillips and the Lausanne Soloists, of which he is the music director. In addition to the famous “Four Seasons of Buenos Aires,” it is surprising to hear “Aconcagua”—a rare piece originally written for the bandoneon—performed on the cello. For this recording, Phillips commissioned his childhood friend, composer Olivier Carmel, to create arrangements that remain faithful to the original compositions. He succeeds in uncompromisingly expressing Piazzolla’s worldview—with its contrasts of ruggedness and sharpness, and a quality that seems to drown in sentimentality yet is also violent—through the cello and strings. Astor Piazzolla’s unmistakable musical language is now widely known throughout the world and has achieved true universality. Following in the footsteps of Carlos Gardel, the Argentine bandoneonist and composer Piazzolla revolutionized tango in the 1950s, bestowing a new aesthetic identity upon the genre. Piazzolla’s tango, which transcended the boundaries of dance music with its intense power, became the cornerstone of all his musical creations. Performers who take on Piazzolla’s music must master the unique compositional style born from the encounter between the popular art of Buenos Aires’ “barrios” (neighborhoods) and European art music. While deepening their understanding of this style, Xavier Phillips and the Lausanne Soloists have cultivated a passionate relationship with this music—a blend of melancholy and elation that embodies the soul of Buenos Aires.
