Description:
[Experience the Musical Riches of the Kingdom of Spain—Which Ruled the World and Swept Across Europe—Through Instrumental Ensembles] Focusing on masterpieces by composers active in the royal court during the 15th to 17th centuries—the Kingdom of Spain’s most glorious era—and also featuring works by composers from other regions that incorporated Spanish elements, this is an excellent project that explores the true nature of the cultural prestige of that kingdom’s Golden Age. Concerto Scirocco, which has already released many acclaimed albums on the Arcana label, recreates the musical environment of the Spanish royal court—which contributed significantly to the great strides made in instrumental ensembles—by varying the combinations of instruments depending on the piece. The ensemble focuses on a variety of wind instruments, including the shawm (a double-reed instrument), the cornetto, the bahón (a dulcian—the predecessor to the bassoon, beloved in Spain until the 18th century, with a wide range of variations from high to low pitches), various recorders, and trombones, among other wind instruments, changing the ensemble’s configuration depending on the piece to virtually recreate the musical environment of the Spanish royal court, which contributed significantly to the great strides made in instrumental ensemble music. While the plucked sounds of the harpsichord and vihuela add accents, the distinctive timbres of the high-pitched bahón and shawm also enhance the atmosphere throughout, offering a performance that evokes the music of days gone by—ranging from majestic sounds that recall the prestige of a global empire to the beautiful, delicate expressions of string solos. In addition to masterpieces by musicians from the Netherlands who were highly favored by King Charles I of Spain (Emperor Charles V), the album also features works by Ortiz of Rome, Venetian composer Serma, Neapolitan composer Falconieri, and German composer Praetorius—all of whom carried the essence of Spanish music beyond the Iberian Peninsula. The booklet (in English, French, and Italian) clearly lists the historical sources for each piece, the tracks on which each musician appears, and details on all the instruments used. Naxos Japan
