Alina Ibragimova, alongside her long-time duo partner Cédric Tiberghien, has finally begun recording the complete Beethoven violin sonatas! The first release in this project—aiming for completion in 2027, the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death—also marks Ibragimova’s debut solo album on the BIS label. Ibragimova plays an instrument strung with gut, while Tiberghien uses a fortepiano with a Viennese action. They vividly bring to life for modern audiences the soundscape that listeners would have heard at the time of the premieres, during the transition to the 19th century. The three pieces of Op. 12 were published, in accordance with the conventions of the time, as “for clavichord or fortepiano with violin accompaniment”; however, much like Mozart’s late sonatas, the violin takes on a greater prominence, and there are increasing instances where the two instruments engage in an equal dialogue. In the popular No. 5, “Spring,” Ibragimova maintains a light, brisk tempo while constantly shifting the music’s expression through meticulous control of phrasing and dynamics. Tiberian’s perfectly synchronized playing goes without saying. The exquisite balance between the two instruments captured on this recording is a major highlight.
