Description:

[The Sounds of the Era Revived with Period Instruments: Mozart Performed by Baldelou and Friends] The long-awaited second volume of “Mozart: Complete Clarinet Works” by Nicolas Baldelou, one of today’s finest clarinetists. This series focuses on vividly reviving the sound Mozart envisioned through a thorough exploration of period instruments. A highlight of this recording is the use of a period-spec basset clarinet in the “Clarinet Concerto,” a masterpiece from Mozart’s late period. Created around 1788 through the collaboration between Anton Stadler—the renowned clarinetist to whom this work was dedicated—and instrument maker Theodor Lotz, the basset clarinet extends the low register beyond that of the standard clarinet. In contrast to the homogenized tone of modern instruments, it possesses an exceptionally wide sonic palette, ranging from dark, resonant lows to brilliant highs. Bardilou has independently recreated this instrument, which had been forgotten for some 150 years, and in his performance, he incorporates even its inherent fragility into his expression, carving out each note to get to the very heart of the composer’s final creative impulse. Meanwhile, the “Concerto-Symphony,” conceived in Paris during the composer’s youth, is the world’s first recording in which each soloist uses instruments that are exact replicas of those used in Paris at the time. The dialogue unfolding among four distinct wind instruments—performed by the masterful dual-instrumentalist David Guerrier (trumpet and horn) and the young prodigy Gabriel Pido—is truly theatrical. Along with the distinctive character of each instrument, which cannot be experienced on modern instruments, it seems to convey the vitality of Paris at that time. This album represents a challenge to capture the true sound, transcending mere nostalgia. *Japanese liner notes for the domestic edition by Mitsuya Nakanishi Naxos Japan
