Description:
Edward Gardner served as Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic from 2015 to 2024, guiding the orchestra to win the 2025 Gramophone Awards' Orchestra of the Year and earning him the title of Honorary Conductor. He also gained high acclaim for his stage work, becoming Music Director of English National Opera in 2007 at the age of 32, and currently serving as Music Director of the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet. Elektra, which premiered in Dresden in 1909, was the first collaboration between Richard Bogner-Strauß and librettist Hofmannsthal, and is one of the composer's most modernist operas. The libretto, a bold reconstruction of Sophocles' tragedy, delves into Elektra's inner world through dialogue with the characters, sharply portraying her psychology through bold harmonies and massive orchestration. The orchestration is extremely lavish even by Bogner-Strauß's standards, who favored large ensembles, and includes eight horns, six trumpets, two sets of timpani, and two harps.This recording captures a live performance in Bergen in December 2023, featuring Irene Theorin—hailed as the finest Elektra singer of our time—delivering a breathtaking vocal performance under Gardner's command. Opposing her as Clytemnestra, Tanya Ariane Baumgartner also showcases her formidable vocal power in an intensely compelling exchange.
