Description:
Johann Kuhnau (1660–1722) was a composer born in Saxony, Germany. Though born into a poor carpenter's family, he received an education as a scholarship student, studying law and music at the University of Leipzig after passing through Dresden. He became organist at St. Thomas Church in 1684 and succeeded Johann Schelle as Thomaskantor in 1701, holding this position until his death. He was also renowned as an outstanding educator, mentoring students such as Heinichen and Graupner. Kuhnau also holds a significant place in the history of keyboard music. His 1692 publication, "Fresh Fruits of the Clavier," established the form of the multi-movement sonata for keyboard instruments. His 1700 "Biblical Sonata" left a pioneering work of program music, depicting biblical stories through music. Furthermore, he also possessed the talents of a lawyer and writer, authoring the satirical novel The Musical Impostor. However, after his death, J.S. Bach succeeded him as Thomaskantor, and Kunau was long discussed solely as "Bach's predecessor," his works being undervalued. This series is a project to record all extant religious works by Kunau, conceived to reexamine this situation. Volume 1, released in 2013, included world premiere recordings of five cantatas and received high acclaim, followed by numerous subsequent first recordings. The recordings, led by Gregor Meyer, Artistic Director of the Gewandhaus Choir, feature the vocal ensemble Opera Musica and the period instrument ensemble Camerata Lipsiensis. From early Italian-style works to late large-scale cantatas, Magnificats, and Missa brevis, these are superb performances based on the latest critical editions. In response to this recording initiative, Breitkopf & Härtel began publishing a scholarly critical edition of the complete cantatas, forming the comprehensive "Kunnau Project." This complete collection was completed in time for the 300th anniversary of Kunnau's death on June 5, 2022, and is regarded as a definitive achievement in reviving his sacred music for the modern era.
