【The Second Release in the BBC Archive Revival Series: Arvid Jansons' Shostakovich Symphonies Nos. 5 & 9!】 Following the acclaimed Tchaikovsky album (ICAC-5177) released in 2024, ICA Classics presents the second installment of Arvid Jansons' recordings: Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 and No. 9 from his 1971 London concert with the Leningrad Philharmonic. Jansons stepped in as a last-minute replacement for Mravinsky, making this a particularly welcome release. The Fifth is a live recording from the Proms, including the encore "Lohengrin" performed that evening (incidentally, the first half of the program that day featured "Sleeping Beauty" and "Francesca da Rimini," both included on the earlier Tchaikovsky album). You can hear the audience's fervor, seemingly shaking the vast Royal Albert Hall. The Ninth is a live recording from the Royal Festival Hall six days later, where Jansons's meticulous interpretation comes through with even greater clarity in this higher-resolution recording.Symphony No. 5 was previously available on a mono CD believed to be an aircheck recording, but this release features stereo recordings meticulously remastered by Paul Bailey of Re:Sound from the BBC's original master tapes. You can savor the Leningrad Philharmonic's brilliance from that era—the intense sound pressure of the brass, the undulating strings—alongside Jansons' dynamic yet meticulously detailed musicality, which is said to have placed great importance on rehearsals.
