Description:
The True Nature of the Exquisite and Brilliant Musical Drama that Resonated in Early 17th-Century Naples Posillipo is a scenic area in the outskirts of Naples, a hilly region that has flourished since ancient times as a place where the wealthy reside. Until the early 17th century, it was home to the Spanish Habsburg family's villa and was also a symbol of the prosperity of the Kingdom of Naples, ruled by viceroys appointed by that family. The musical dance drama "The Pleasures of Posillipo" was staged with grand theatrical machinery at the Royal Palace of Naples in 1620. It is said that influential nobles present participated in the dance scenes. Fortunately, most of the music, along with the libretto, survives. Centered on an archaic polyphonic choral style, it features vibrant Spanish dance music throughout, creating a brilliantly dynamic work. This recording also includes other works by composers who served the Neapolitan court at the time, revealing the true nature of the musical dramas performed following prayers in the chapel. The performance is by La Grande Chapelle, a renowned ensemble of Belgian and French musicians, familiar to LAUDA label listeners. The instrumental ensemble of 21 musicians features prominent names like Elsa Frank and Jeremy Papaselgio on woodwinds, Pygmalion and I Gemelli, and Jerome van Warbeke (violin) active in leading orchestras. They occasionally switch instruments, facing a vocal ensemble of 10 alongside percussion and basso continuo, in five consorts: recorders, Renaissance bassoon (bakhun), brass, viola da gamba, and violin. brass, viola da gamba, and violin families. They engage with the 10-member vocal ensemble alongside percussion and basso continuo in five distinct consorts. Soloists like Nicholas Scott (tenor) and Hugo Oliveira (bass) also join the choir, vividly conveying the resplendent sounds that once graced the courts of southern Europe. Naxos Japan
