Description:
The Beauty of English Poetry Shines! Renowned Soprano Ruby Hughes Presents a Collection of British Songs from Past and Present This album marks her second collaboration with Swedish lutenist Jonas Nudberg and Japanese Baroque cellist and viol da gamba player Mine Yamahiro Bringman, following their 2016 recording "Heroines of Love and Loss" (BISSA2248). Hughes has chosen to focus on English songs for this project. He states that his deep admiration for the meditative and melancholic lute songs of the Elizabethan era, such as those by Dowland, was the inspiration behind creating this album. The program begins with Dowland's representative lute songs and lute solos, such as "Flow, My Tears" and "Time Stands Still," then moves through songs by his Elizabethan contemporaries Johnson and Daniel, lute solos by Holborne, and viola da gamba solos by Hume, finally connecting to 17th-century songs by Purcell.Britten serves as the bridge connecting Purcell to the modern era. Following the turning point of the renowned "Corpus Christi Carol" set to ancient poetry, songs by contemporary British female composers follow. Shakespeare provides another bridge linking early music and the modern era on this album. Johnson's "Where the Bee Hops" and "Five Fathoms Deep," composed by a fellow member of the King's Men troupe during Shakespeare's lifetime, are rare works sung within the play during the 1611 production of The Tempest, with Shakespeare's permission. Echoing these songs, the contemporary art songs commissioned for this album also use Shakespeare's famous lines as their texts. Naxos Japan
