Fritz Kaufmann moved from pharmacy to music, studying with Kiel in Berlin and Vienna, and was recognized by Brahms. As concert conductor of the Magdeburg Society and conductor of the prestigious Löbling Choir, he made a major contribution to music education and had an impact beyond his region. Kaufmann left about 50 compositions during his lifetime, and his style shows the influence of Brahms and his teacher Kiel. The Piano Trio No. 1 in C minor is based on a classical form, with a lyrical adagio, an old-fashioned scherzo, and a powerful finale, all with youthful inventiveness and a solid sense of structure. No. 2 in E-flat major is a mature work six years later. The first movement, which opens strongly in unison, features a coherent and elegant theme with organic connections of motives. The second movement is colored with a mournful melody, followed by an impetuous scherzo and a brilliant finale. The performance is by Andreas Hartmann, former first concertmaster of the MDR Symphony Orchestra, Rathbach, cellist of the MDR Symphony Orchestra, and Henneberg, lecturer at the Georg Philipp Telemann Conservatory in Magdeburg.
