Bassoonist Amy Herman was appointed solo bassoonist of the Philharmonia Orchestra at the age of 23 and is currently principal of the Aurora Orchestra. She is a highly regarded soloist, chamber musician, and educator, and has been invited to perform as guest principal with major European orchestras, including the Estonian Festival Orchestra led by Paavo Järvi and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Amy says that she has focused on the "make the instrument sing" aspect of the composers she admires, and that it has been important for her to treat the bassoon as an extension of the voice.In her early twenties, she gave many recitals under the auspices of the Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT), where she continued to be drawn to arrangements of songs and repertoire in which the bassoon becomes more than a comic image, but a "voice".
